Title – ‘Wideband vibrational energy harvesting using novel MEMS/NEMS electromagnetic transducers for ‘Internet of Things – IoT”
Project:The rapid growth in the field of wireless sensor networks aiming the realization of ‘Internet of Things- IoT’ has highlighted the issue of powering remote sensor nodes. The requirement to change batteries places an unwanted additional maintenance and enormous cost burden on such huge wireless networks. In certain applications where environmental vibrations are present, there is the opportunity to harvest the kinetic energy of these vibrations and use this to power the remote sensor node. The focus of this PhD project will be on design, modellingand development of vibration based electromagnetic micropowergenerators using micro magnets and silicon MEMS/NEMS structures. The project will also include development and characterization of nano-structured magnetic materials for device integration.
Position available: PhD Position: Applications are sought for a four year PhD position with fellowship (€18,000/annum tax-free + Tuition fees) under supervision of Prof. Saibal Roy in the Micropowersystems and nanomagneticsgroup, Micro-nano-systems centre, Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork, Ireland. The successful applicant will work as part of a multidisciplinary research team, which has a focus on the development of integrated magnetics.
The research of this particular position will involve elements of the following;

Review of state of the art (publications in journals, conferences and patents)
-
Design, extensive mechanical and electromagnetic modelling(FEA) of MEMS/NEMS structures

Development and characterization of nano-structured magnetic materials
-
Device fabrication using MEMS/NEMS technologies in the clean room
-
Electrical characterization of fabricated devices & model validation
Requirements:Qualifications:
a) Masters (or Bachalors1H1/similar grade) degree in Physics/ Electrical/ Electronic/ Mechanical/ Microelectronics/ Materials Science or similar.
b) Proficiency in English, non-native English speakers should provide IELTS/TOEFL score
Preferable: Candidates will be given preference having the following experiences;
a) Experience in modelling, FEA simulation (COMSOL, MATLAB, Maxwell ANSOFT)
b) Experience in mask designing, layout
c) Experience in microelectronic fabrication processes
d) Knowledge in magnetism, micromagneticsimulation of nanomagneticpatterns and experience in magnetic measurements such as in SQUID/VSM is plus
e) Ability to write the project reports, articles in journals/conference
